Scottsdale's dogs are about to have a lot more room to run. The city is opening Thompson Peak Dog Park, a 3.5-acre off-leash park at Thompson Peak Park (20199 N. 78th Place), with a grand opening celebration planned for Friday, Aug. 21.
Grand Opening Details
The celebration will run from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, first access to the new off-leash areas, and free pup cups for dogs in attendance.
What's Inside the Park
The $6.1 million project, funded through voter-approved 2019 bonds and General Fund dollars, brings a serious upgrade to Scottsdale's off-leash options:
- Three separate fenced play areas, similar to the setup at Chaparral Park, so the city can rotate sections and let grass recover between uses
- Shade structures, benches, and water fountains
- Pet waste stations and a restroom building
- Additional parking along Hayden Road
- A footbridge connecting the dog park to the rest of Thompson Peak Park
The park will also feature custom public art: local artist Shachi Kale has designed four panels for the shade structures, inspired by Scottsdale's landscape and "a variety of dogs, doing dog things," as she put it, with the occasional bird or cat making an appearance too.
Years in the Making
Thompson Peak Dog Park was first identified in Scottsdale's 2015 Community Services Master Plan and later funded through the city's 2019 Bond Election. Once open, it becomes Scottsdale's fourth dog park, joining Chaparral, Horizon, and Vista del Camino, and will follow the same rules as the city's other off-leash areas.
Open daily from sunrise until 10:30 p.m.
