Coming Soon: Thompson Peak Dog Park in Scottsdale

Scottsdale Expands Its Dog-Friendly Lifestyle with a Brand-New Park

Scottsdale dog owners will soon have a brand-new spot to let their pups run, play, and socialize. The City of Scottsdale has approved construction of the Thompson Peak Dog Park, a three-and-a-half-acre off-leash park located at Thompson Peak Park, 20199 N 78th Place, on the southwest corner of Hayden Road and Thompson Peak Parkway.

What to Expect

The new park will be designed much like the well-loved Chaparral Dog Park, with safe, fenced, and gated play areas. Here’s what’s planned:

  • Three separate cells for dogs: one 1.5-acre grass area, one 1-acre grass area, and one 1-acre wood chip area for variety and easier maintenance.

  • Shade canopies, benches, water fountains, and pet waste stations for comfort and convenience.

  • A footbridge connecting the dog park to other Thompson Peak Park amenities.

  • Additional parking along Hayden Road and a brand-new restroom building.

  • Public art by local artist Shachi Kale, featuring colorful, whimsical panels of dogs, cats, and Scottsdale’s desert landscape.

Why Three Cells?

Rotating the cells helps keep surfaces fresh and safe. This design allows grass to rest, reduces mud, saves water, and ensures fewer closures for maintenance.

Project Timeline

  • Spring 2024: Native tree salvage and relocation began.

  • Late Summer/Fall 2025: Construction is set to start.

  • Summer 2026: The dog park is expected to open.

Scottsdale’s Dog Parks

Thompson Peak Dog Park will join Scottsdale’s existing three off-leash areas:

  • Chaparral Dog Park – 3 acres of grass and Scottsdale’s most popular dog park.

  • Horizon Dog Park – Smaller, with shade and a dust-control water feature.

  • Vista del Camino Dog Park – Half an acre with plenty of trees and benches.

Why It Matters

With Scottsdale’s growing community of dog owners, this project is a welcome addition, especially since it’s very close to McDowell Mountain Ranch. The mix of grass and wood chip surfaces, thoughtful amenities, and artwork make it more than just a dog park - it’s a new hub for neighbors and their pets to gather, socialize, and enjoy Scottsdale’s outdoor lifestyle.
