At the heart of McDowell Mountain Ranch is a place that feels like a hidden gem, unless you already know how special it is. We’re talking about the Arabian Library, a beautifully designed community hub where education, architecture, wildlife, and friendly faces all come together.
Whether you're new to the area or a longtime resident who hasn’t stopped by in a while, here are ten fun facts that might surprise you:
1. It’s part of Scottsdale’s horse-themed library family.
Arabian joins Appaloosa, Mustang, and (formerly) Palomino Libraries in a nod to Scottsdale’s deep equestrian roots. The name is a tribute to the Arabian horse and the world-renowned Arabian Horse Show held at nearby WestWorld.
2. The library is partially built underground.
This clever design helps the building blend into the desert terrain, reduces cooling needs, and provides visitors with shaded views of the surrounding wildlife and mountains.
3. It’s a photographer’s dream.
The library’s striking rusted steel entry mimics a Sedona-style slot canyon. It’s become a go-to location for graduation photos, wedding shoots, and even national commercials.
4. The Branch Manager, Louisa Aiken, is a true gem.
Louisa has dedicated her career to libraries since 1978. She started as a youth librarian and now leads the Arabian Library with warmth, wisdom, and a deep love for the community. She calls herself a “virtual grandmother” to the many kids who visit.
5. It's the only Scottsdale library next to a school campus.
Located right by both an elementary and middle school, Arabian is a popular after-school spot for students, making it a true community hub.
6. You can spot desert wildlife up close.
From cardinals and quail to rabbits, bobcats, and roadrunners (who literally tap on the windows for their mealworms!), the library’s quiet setting makes it a magnet for local wildlife.
7. The staff is one of its best features.
Louisa describes the team as “shining stars” known for their warmth, helpfulness, and dedication. Many visitors comment on how friendly and welcoming the atmosphere is.
8. It’s more than just books.
You’ll find STEAM programming, art clubs, a manga collection, movie recommendations, and even video games available to check out.
9. Events are a big deal here.
From their Ultimate Family Play Date to Bunnanza, Halloween Family Fun Night, and Arabian Nights Book Club, there’s something for every age group happening year-round.
10. Teen volunteers help bring the magic.
This past summer, 30 local teens gave their time to support library programs. It’s one more way Arabian connects with the community and offers meaningful opportunities to give back.
